Introduction
This practical course is aimed at those who are attending fire training on induction or as a refresher.
Aims
Fire training will ensure that all staff will:
- Understand the characteristics of fire, smoke and toxic fumes
- Know the hazards involved in the working environments used by staff
- Know the correct action to take if fire breaks out or smoke is detected
- Be familiar with the evacuation procedures and escape routes applicable to their location
- Understand the basic use of fire extinguishers
Programme
Staff will be informed of the wider implications of fire safety namely:
- The basics of building compartmentation
- The importance of closing fire doors and not wedging doors open
- The importance of monitoring contractors
- The importance of being aware of the locations of escape routes
- The fatal effects of smoke from combustion of man made materials
- The fire hazards associated with the building
- How to recognise signs of fire
- Specific local fire alarm procedures
- Review of local fire extinguishers
And to include:
- Questionnaire on basic fire safety
- Fire safety on site premises
- Fire safety in homes
- Review of the use of fire extinguishers
- Hands-on use of fire extinguishers, (weather and location permitting)
Trainers
Each trainer will possess at least the following qualifications, skills and experience:
- An understanding of the legal requirements appropriate to fire training, e.g., Fire Precautions Workplace Regulations 1997 etc.
- An understanding of appropriate British Standard publications on fire safety e.g., BS 5588: Fire Precautions in the Design and Construction of Buildings;
- BS 5839: Fire detection and alarm systems for buildings
- BS 7863: Portable fire extinguishers.
- Three years experience of training;
- One thousand hours of teaching experience of which 20 hours have been supervised.
